Canal: How West London's Most Exciting New Restaurant Was Born

West London had been waiting for this. When Canal Restaurant opened on the banks of the Grand Union Canal in Westbourne Park, it wasn't just another new opening, it was the arrival of a group that had spent years making east London fall in love with the way a well-run room should feel. For us at Canal Restaurant Westbourne Park, the story of how we got here is one worth telling.

A first for west London

HAM Restaurants built its reputation across Spitalfields, Soho, and Shoreditch, Crispin, Bar Crispin, Bistro Freddie. Brilliant rooms, every one of them. But west London? That was always the one that got away.

Canal changes that. We are HAM's very first venture into west London, and the neighbourhood has welcomed us in the warmest possible way. If you've ever sat at Bistro Freddie and wondered what that team might do with a proper waterside setting, you now have your answer.

The Taxi House transformation

The building we call home has a history as rich as the water outside our windows. Taxi House, on Woodfield Road in Westbourne Park, was once the headquarters of the London Taxi Drivers' Association, a place of industry, community, and purpose. Today it sits at the heart of Mason & Fifth, a new mixed-use development that brings together suites, wellness spaces, cultural venues, and a restaurant that feels entirely at ease with its surroundings.

The transformation was led by London interior architecture studio A-nrd, the same hands behind Kol and Kolae, who worked in close collaboration with our founder Dominic Hamdy. Exposed concrete columns, hammered zinc panels, bespoke Sapele timber shelving, hand-chiselled beech booths crafted by London maker Jason Posno: every surface tells a story of industrial heritage softened by warmth and craft. The dining room holds up to 70 guests. Outside, the south-facing terrace reaches right to the water's edge.

Quality Projects, a new chapter

Canal also marks the debut of something beyond just a new address. Quality Projects is a dedicated special projects and consultancy business founded by Dominic Hamdy, its first partnership is with Mason & Fifth, and there is more in the pipeline.

Think of Quality Projects as the vehicle for the collaborations that the traditional group model doesn't quite accommodate: innovative concepts, site-specific partnerships, ideas that demand a different kind of creative freedom. Canal is its opening statement, and it's quite a statement to open with.

The team Dominic assembled

A restaurant is only ever as good as the people inside it, and Dominic assembled a team that would make anyone lean forward.

In the kitchen, New York-born chef Adrian Hernandez Farina leads the way. His CV reads like a shortlist of the most serious dining rooms of the last decade: The French Laundry in California, ASKA in New York, Humo and the Chiltern Firehouse in London, Coal Rooms in Peckham. What Adrian brings to Canal is a precise, seasonal sensibility, dishes built from the best British and European produce, composed with genuine technical craft and served without ceremony.

The waterside vision

The detail that matters most here is the view. Wallpaper called the terrace "a suntrap". Hot Dinners described the concept as "gritty urban Riviera". Rakish Gent said it was "bold flavour and laid-back elegance". They're all right.

But what none of those descriptions quite capture is the feeling of sitting on our south-facing terrace as the light changes on the water. The canal is alive in a way that a street or a courtyard simply isn't narrowboats, joggers on the towpath, the gentle rhythm of west London going about its afternoon. We're here, right in the middle of it, unhurried and glad of it.
